Best Places for Family Photos in Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs Family Photography | Mountain Sessions

If you’re planning a summer trip to Steamboat Springs, family photos are one of the best ways to remember this season together. Between mountain views, wildflowers, rivers, and long summer sunsets, Steamboat has some of the most beautiful locations in Colorado for relaxed, connection-focused family photography.

As a local Steamboat Springs family photographer, these are some of my favorite places for vacation family photos — especially for families wanting natural scenery, room for kids to move, and iconic mountain backdrops.

1. Steamboat Lake State Park

For families wanting the full Colorado mountain experience, Steamboat Lake is hard to beat.

Located just outside of Clark, this location offers:

  • mountain lake views

  • open fields

  • evergreen forests

  • peaceful sunset light

  • incredible reflections on calm evenings

Steamboat Lake feels especially perfect for:

  • extended family sessions

  • adventurous families

  • families willing to drive about 30 minutes north (but with a drive that looks like you are watching Yellowstone) ;)

  • sunset sessions with younger kids who need space to explore

The scenery feels expansive and timeless, especially in late summer when the grasses turn golden and the evening light settles over the water.

Best Time for Photos at Steamboat Lake

Sunset is by far the most beautiful time here. Summer evenings bring soft golden light and cooler temperatures, making it ideal for relaxed family sessions.

Outfit Tips

Neutral tones, soft earth colors, denim, creams, sage greens, and layered textures photograph beautifully against the lake and mountain scenery.

2. Fish Creek Falls

Fish Creek Falls is one of the most iconic locations in Steamboat Springs for family vacation photos.

This area combines:

  • waterfall scenery

  • forest trails

  • mountain views

  • wildflowers

  • dramatic Colorado landscapes

It’s especially beautiful for families wanting a more adventurous mountain feel while still staying close to town.

One of my favorite things about Fish Creek is the variety. We can capture:

  • scenic overlook images

  • candid walking moments

  • playful family interaction

  • quiet forest portraits

The light here is especially beautiful in the evening, when the canyon softens and the mountains begin to glow.

Best For

  • families with older kids

  • adventurous vacation sessions

  • couples visiting Steamboat

  • surprise proposals

  • mountain-focused portraits

What to Know

Because Fish Creek Falls is a popular summer destination, weekday evenings are usually the best for quieter photo sessions.

3. Yampa River Botanic Park

The Yampa River Botanic Park is one of the easiest and most family-friendly photo locations in Steamboat Springs.

This location is perfect for:

  • younger kids

  • grandparents

  • multi-generational family sessions

  • relaxed evening walks

  • summer wildflowers

The gardens offer:

  • colorful blooms

  • riverside pathways

  • mountain views

  • shaded areas

  • easy accessibility

It’s especially beautiful during peak summer when flowers are in full bloom and the gardens feel lush and vibrant.

For families visiting Steamboat for reunions or summer vacations, this is one of the most stress-free locations for portraits.

Best Time for Photos

About 1–2 hours before sunset gives the softest light while still keeping the gardens bright and colorful.

4. Open Fields with Mt. Werner Backdrops

Some of my favorite locations in Steamboat Springs are actually the quieter open meadow areas overlooking Mt. Werner.

These locations create:

  • wide-open mountain views

  • tall grasses

  • golden sunset light

  • wildflowers in summer

  • classic Colorado scenery

They’re perfect for families wanting:

  • relaxed candid moments

  • room for kids to run

  • timeless mountain portraits

  • a quieter setting away from crowds

The Mt. Werner backdrop gives these sessions a distinctly Steamboat feel without requiring a hike or busy tourist location.

These meadow locations are especially stunning:

  • in July and August wildflower season

  • during golden hour

  • at sunset when the mountains catch warm evening light

Tips for Planning Family Vacation Photos in Steamboat Springs

Book Early

Summer dates in Steamboat Springs fill quickly, especially around holidays and reunion weekends.

Plan Around Sunset

The best mountain light almost always happens in the evening.

Keep Outfits Simple

Soft neutrals and natural colors photograph beautifully against Steamboat’s landscapes and help keep the focus on connection and emotion.

Let Kids Be Kids

Some of the best vacation photos come from movement, laughter, and interaction rather than perfectly posed moments.
